Saturday and Sunday I was working again for MasterCard as corporate Magician Singapore for the launch of their new program Priceless Surprises. The event was hosted at the MasterCard theater at Marina Bay Sands. My job was to entertain the clients in the queue who were waiting for their price. Usually these events are not my favorites since the audience is only focused on the prices they get. This one was actually quite fun since I could do longer shows for the people in line covering up to 15-20 people at a time. It reminded me of a busking style show that I used to do at street festivals. The problem in Casinos in Singapore is that hired performers can only do their shows inside the respective venue e.g. at the MasterCard theater. The space right in front of the place is Casino space and you cannot perform their without a specific license. The event and the performance went well and I had repeat “customers” that came twice to see something else.

Restaurant Magician Singapore

When you work as a restaurant magician Singapore you have to deal with all kinds of situations. Recently I was asked by the management to go to VIP table in one of the private rooms at Mezza9 . I walk in introduce myself and tell them that I am the entertainment the Gentleman who had reserved the table and room turns around looks at me and says with a stone face: No we don’t need this please leave. I excused myself with a smile for the interruption and turned around to walk out. He started laughing and said just kidding come in and show us what you got. He was a tough spectator but I won him over and he thanked me at the end for the performance. The same group came back yesterday and this time he requested me to do a performance and at the end he gave me a hug at the end of the show. A very funny guy. I wished all my performance were like this.

Axis Bank India was looking for corporate entertainment Singapore. They found my website and I was hired to perform at their Sales Award Dinner last week Saturday at the Swissotel The Stamford in Singapore. They flew in 300 of their top performers from India for a weekend in Singapore. Some of these guys had never been overseas and it was the first trip. I was booked to do a 20 minute stage performance. Since my act doesn’t use any big props but relies on audience interaction, a good sound an light equipment was essential. This was all top notch. The event organizer was Kaleidoscope from India and they handled it great. Axis Bank flew in their Master of Ceremonies as well. The reason was that the audience came from all parts of India and they need someone who could pronounce all the names correctly in the main dialects. The performance went ok but I realized that even so everybody spoke English a lot of my lines fell flat. I believe it due to the fact that the humor is different and comedy and comic lines are a lot subject to education and background. I want to re-script my program to be more descriptive and leave out some of the jokes. Lessons learned. Here is the picture (stage view) of the function room before people came in.

Magician Singapore – corporate event

Magician Singapore performs at MasterCard corporate event

When you work as a corporate Magician Singapore you are sometimes booked for events that are not a regular performance like at party or corporate dinner. I am currently hired by MasterCard to support their launch of a new program called Priceless Surprises.

Basically I have to come out twice an hour and perform a quick bit for the current winner. I sometime think this is not ideal for Magic since you are used as gadget. However I believe it is your job to your best to perform a good show for the client regardless of the setting. During one of the performances I had 2 ladies on the platform with me and their faces were the perfect match for the tagline of the campaign a priceless surprise. I hope that the on site photographer got a snapshot of that. Basically it is important to have fun with any given situation this positive attitude transcends to the people watching and they ‘usually’ like what you do. I will do 4 more of these at Sentosa and at the MasterCard Theater at Marina Bay Sands.

One of my repeat customers My Private Chef hired me to do close-up/strolling/roving at a big event at the Gardens by the Bay at the flower field hall. My Private Chef specializes in high-end private and corporate hospitality events. What makes us unique is that they focus on the whole occasion from the menu, custom designed by one of the top chefs in their portfolio. The client was BNP Paribas a French bank and financial services company. They had about 300 invited guests for this cocktail event. Since I can cover about 100 people in an hour I hired another magician to perform with me. His name is Solomon a local magician with excellent close-up skills. We have done quite a number of events in the past and he fits the bill for corporate events, especially for an international crowd.

The Hour Glass hired me to entertain at the launch of a new watch/watch brand Urwerk. Since the most clients of the Hour Glass are end customers the audience came mainly from Singapore but there were also invited guests from Indonesia and Malaysia. It was a dinner event hosted at the Italian restaurant Rubato . I was hired 2 days in row and my job was to entertain the clients in between courses. Since I do this every Sunday at the Hyatt it was an easy task. The only challenge was that they had only 2 long tables with about 20-25 guests each. This meant I could only work at the long end doing more off a parlor type show. It was a great evening(s) with a lot of fun people. I customized my presentation to get the name of the Hour Glass and Urwerk in front of the clients again during the performance. This connected the entertainment with the theme of the overall launch event and from the reactions of the audience I could tell that is was appreciated. I hope that more gigs like this one come along this year.

Restaurant Magicians

Restaurant magicians face sometimes the obstacle of smaller crows at their residence performance place. At the Hyatt this is usually no issue since they have an average of 250 – 300 guests every Sunday and in 2 hours I can cover at the most 100 people. However today there were only about 150 guests due to a lot of short notice cancellations and I could cover about two thirds of the tables. At the restaurant I worked prior to the Hyatt. we had usually between 8-15 tables for the brunch and it was easy to get around. The trick was to stay around longer and chit chat more, but that’s part of the job. I believe if you are not a people person you can’t do close up magic. Until next week.

On May 6 I was hired to provide corporate event entertainment at the Jewel Box on Mount Faber. I was hired to do an hour of close up magic as part of the re-branding launch event. There were about 200 guests and I tried my best to cover as many as possible. It was a great event even so I had to perform outside. It was a hot and humid day (I guess like 90% of days here). I got good reaction and managed to also work indoors since some of the guest preferred the AC rooms as well. Here a picture how the restaurant looks like inside:

As a restaurant magician you often get  requests from management to entertain some VIP customer/guest. At the Hyatt they have private rooms that you can reserve for the brunch with cater for up 30 people. Yesterday I got a request to entertain at one of the rooms for one of the VIP guests. When I walked in and introduce myself the main person looked at me stone faced and said no thank you. All you can do is excuse yourself politely and exit. However the gentleman just played a joke and started laughing – he was basically testing my reaction and the others in the room looked how I would respond. I just said you have a great sense of humor I think it would be worthwhile to include you in my act as heckler at other tables would you mind after the performance here to come along. I got a laugh and he said yes. The rest of the show was great and I stayed longer than usual. You have to think on your feed as a restaurant magician.

Magician on Vacation

I went with my wife on vacation to Japan. In 2 weeks we covered a bunch of Cities in Kyushu. Starting in Fukuoka/Hakata to Kumamoto, Beppu and Kagaoshima. The last 4 days we spent in Tokyo to see family and friends. Even so I was a magician on vacation I still have magic and performance on the mind. In Fukuoka we took a trip to a nice place called Dazaifu to visit the famous temple and shrine there. I had the chance to watch there a japanese street performer that did juggling, magic and the old are of  Tamasudare. The performance consists of a person skilled in manipulating special screens made of loosely woven sticks, as well as chanting an accompanying kind of poetry. The performer chants a rhythmic poem as he or she uses the screen to portray the objects in the poetry without stopping. On one of the photos you can see a basket that’s were he collects the money after the show. Seeing the performance I got the idea to incorporate this in the theater show that I am planning. In the story/script I also speak about my life and performances in Japan and this is something unique. Now I have to find out where to get the bamboo mats and instructions.
