Close up magician at the Night at the Races

Close up magician at the Night at the Races

Last week I was engaged by the Australian Chamber of Commerce as close up magician to entertain there members and sponsors at the night at the races at the Singapore Turf Club. There were about 200 guests present. The races are usually every 30 minutes over the course of an evening. It was on a great evening and most of the magic I do fits the theme in way. Especially effects with money and cards which is related to gambling. I got a lot of requests to predict the winner of the next race. It was a fun event and location. Here are some impressions:

Roving Magic at the Airline Pilot Association Singapore Dinner

I was engaged to entertain the guests with Roving Magic prior to the dinner at ball room at the Pan Pacific Hotel. It was a great audience but as performer you only have about an hour to engage with as many people as possible. This means the performance is cut  from the usual 7-10 min to about 5 min. How can I ensure that people will remember it? By creating an effect that is connected with the event or the company that books me. I usually use customized cards that are exclusively printed  for the event. See picture below. If there is only time to do one thing for a group it will be an effect with a card like that.

Magician and Snake Charmer

On July 3 I was hired to do close-up magic for an hour at the ICMAT conference at the Raffles City Convention Center. In my job, you meet a lot of other performers. This was the first time I came across a snake charmer. His name is Mohd Yusof and he is the only one in Singapore. He has been in the business for over 30 years and had a lot of interesting stories to share about his gigs and the people he met. He learned the craft from his Dad. He actually has a real King Cobra in his shows and when he pulled it out on stage at the conference he had the audience in stitches. He said it is still a baby but the critter was already about 3.5 m long. After his stage show, you could take pictures with him and the snakes. Not with the cobra… the snake on the picture is a python I think.

Typical weekday for a Singapore magician

May 25 I was performing for Veeam Software, which is a information technology company developing backup, disaster recovery and virtualization management software. Veeeam just opened their office at central Singapore location and invited their partners to the office opening party for cocktails and snacks.  As a Singapore magician I am performing  quite often at events like this. The objective is to break the ice and make strangers start talking . It helps me that I have worked in IT for long time and I always try to use some general IT jargon in the presentation, like testing, project time, budget and requirements. The event was managed by Citrus Events the MC was friend of Sharlyn Lim if you ever need an MC for a corporate event give her a call

If you’re having a corporate event, company party (sales meeting, conference, dinner and dance, retirement party, etc.), and would like some world-class fun and interactive entertainment to amaze, break the ice,  and entertain your guests, please keep me in mind.

Corporate Entertainer

Corporate Entertainer Singapore

One of the benefits of being a corporate entertainer is that many of the venues I perform at are top notch. In Singapore we have a lot of high rise buildings and many of them have roof top bars one of latest ones is the bar Ku De Ta on top of the Marina Bay Sands Casino. Deutsche Bank was looking for a corporate entertainer in Singapore for the annual networking event that is hosted at the Sky Bar of KuDeTa at the 57th floor for MBS. I was hired to do roving, street magic for 2 hours at this event. If you visit Singapore and you want to enjoy  the view from MBS I would recommend to go to the bar and have a drink. This way you don’t have to pay the fee. If you go to Observation deck at the Sky Park they charge you SGD 23. The view at the bar is great as well and you get a drink for the money.

The event was fun but at the end I was soaked. Singapore in May is very humid and wearing suit and tie adds to this even at the 57th floor.

Prior to the performance it was still cool…

Last week I was hired to perform close-up magic at the Patek Philippe 175th anniversary event at the Singapore Pinacothèque de Paris. With me was another performer Ferris Yeo who specializes in mind-reading and psychological illusions. It was our job to entertain the guests according to special plans throughout the event. The reason why we were selehttps://www.pinacotheque.com.sgted was that there are only a few entertainers in Singapore specializing in corporate events. I know that Ferris mainly performs stage shows at corporate dinners and functions and I would say 75% of my performances are at events like this. The evening went well and it was great to see a performer who does something very different from me tableside. I hope I have the chance to see his stage show one of these days.

Party entertainment

Magic party entertainment different than expected

I generally don’t perform for kids meaning I am not a magician you can hire for a birthday party of a 8 year old. If the audience is a mixed group of adults and children I am OK. Last week I was hired by the JSSL Arsenal soccer school to perform at their annual award event on stage as well as doing party entertainment when the guests came in. I was meeting with the clients prior to the event to discuss the options and they mentioned they will have about 300 adults and 150 children and the focus should be on doing party entertainment for the adults. They booked me for a 15 min stage show and about 1.5 hours of roving magic during the cocktail reception and dinner.

The roving magic went great. The kids were between 8 and 16, this is a good age for me because they understand card tricks…I started with 5 or 6 adults and within a couple of minutes I had about 30 people watching me. This was great and I could cover about 100 people just during the cocktail hour.

The stage performance was a different situation. Before me was a performance of the power storm crew. These guys won the Thailand got talent competition last year I think. I noticed that none of the kids remained in their seats and got very close to the stage. Imagine the stage in the picture surrounded by people.

For me that meant I had to adjust my performance on the fly. I had 2 mind reading effects planned but that would have not worked in that setting since I need adults for this. My back up for cases like this is my busking show which works for almost any audience. As expected when it was my  turn the stage was surrounded by 150 kids and teenagers and all the adults remained on there seats in the back of the room. The performance went OK but a little different than planned. I guess nobody did notice… 😉

Mind Reader in Singapore

Mind Reader in Singapore

Last week I was hired to perform as  a Mind Reader in Singapore at a corporate event the Prestige Class Award 2014-15 for about 400 people. In my usual stage performance I do a couple effects with mind reading but I mix them with other magic effects. The challenge with this event was that the client wanted  to have a complete 30 minute show. I have a show that did fit the requirement however I usually limit it to an audience up to 150 people at a dinner event. Since people were eating during this performance I decided to limit the number of people that join me on stage which is normally the highlight of a Mind Reading performance but  I just do not feel comfortable to get someone up, while his main course is getting cold.

The audience consisted of business owners and their spouses. I decided to do an effect related to marketing – subliminal advertising. Which is the of hidden images in commercial content in the hopes that viewers will process them unconsciously. I used the logo of a famous company which was displayed on the screens. The logo actually contains a number which is displayed only when the logo is inverted. I had the audience look at the logo and then a couple of audience members thought of 3 and 4 digit numbers. These numbers were totaled by another audience member and the total matched the number hidden in the logo. The rest of the performance went OK however I still prefer to do a show after the meal…

Customized Corporate Magic Entertainment

Customized Corporate Magic Entertainment

Customized Corporate Magic Entertainment what does this mean? Companies more often than not ask if a performer can include their product and services into the act. In general this can be done but it requires a lot of preparation beforehand. This week I was hired by HP to perform at a luncheon for their clients and partners. At events like this it is usually difficult to get the attention of the audience since the main thing is the food and networking. The event was hosted at a function room at the Suntec convention center and there were about 160 guests in the audience.

The HP group that hired me deals with IT security and the theme of the event was: Think like a bad guy. The objective was to show clients and partners how to safeguard their business by changing the way they invest in and think about security – from the perspective of the criminals targeting them.  It was my job

  • To influence audience to start thinking differently in an entertaining way
  • Allow audience to enjoy and relax mid-day

I came up with the following plot. Cyber criminals are still using old tricks – exploiting old vulnerabilities – with better skills. Magicians are the same they are using old tricks that have been there for hundreds and some even thousands of years and people are still amazed and entertained.I only did 3 effects. The first one a classic in magic catching coins from thin air to illustrate the point of an old effect that everybody has seen. I finished the show by revealing personal information from one of the people in the audience to summarize that old tricks still work wonder if we keep improving upon them. The show was about 15-20 minutes however the preparation was about 1.5 days. Meeting with the client to understand their requirements, writing a proposal, developing effects and writing the script, reviewing and rehearsal. The performance was well received and got good comments from the HP management.
